Jean Baker Miller was born September 29, 1927, in the Bronx in New York City.〔http://www.nlm.nih.gov/changingthefaceofmedicine/physicians/biography_225.html〕 She was diagnosed with polio at an early age, and was inspired to pursue a career in medicine while in the care of nurses.〔 She attended Hunter College High School in New York City and in 1948 graduated from Sarah Lawrence College.〔 She received her M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1952, remaining in New York for psychiatric residency programs at Montefiore Medical Center, Bellevue Hospital Center, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Upstate Medical Center, and New York Medical College, where she completed her psychoanalytic training.〔〔
